Let the Games Begin

Get into your Opponent's Head - Break His Concentration!

One of the things I learned playing in football games at college is that winning is a whole lot more fun than losing. Getting into your opponents' heads is a good way to help you win. I'm not talking about being nasty or unsportsmanlike, I mean by planting little seeds that can grow into a nagging vine that strangles your opponents' concentration.

An example of this is asking, "do you pull with your left side or do you push with your right - I can't figure out which way is best". Or "hey, your set up looks different, how is it working?" Just a few subtle questions is all it takes to get the edge on your competitors.

Plant Some Seeds and
Reap the Harvest!

I'm reminded of an incident when Scruffy, Knothead and I were playing at a course not too long ago. Knothead said, "Look, some inconsiderate, low down, knuckle draggin' scoundrel is playing ahead of us, eating sunflower seeds and spitting the shells on the green!" Knothead became so furious; I mean he really lost it! He wanted to report him immediately to the club pro and have him thrown off the course. He was so angry that he couldn't concentrate on putting for the rest of the round. His mind became consumed with checking every green to see if any shells had been left behind. This didn't seem to bother Scruffy, so it gave me an idea.

The next Saturday morning when we were playing our usual round, I waited for the perfect opportunity, when Knothead wasn't looking, and dropped a few sunflower seed shells on the green, where he'd be sure to find them. It was no time at all 'till he was off in a tirade and he couldn't putt worth a dang the rest of the day. As we were leaving that hole, I brushed the shells off the green into the rough, to keep it clear for the players behind us.

Each week - same plan, same result.

I've won enough dough from those shells to take a trip to Myrtle Beach!

A Little Side Bet Never Hurt Anyone -
It Can Help You Stay Focused!

I don't know how you feel, but having a little extra riding on a match always helps me to stay focused. If you want to play a game that can put some cash in your pocket and improve your game at the same time, try this one.

Give one point each to a player for hitting fairways (on their drives only), greens in regulation, fewest putts and lowest score. If there is a tie on lowest putts, the players who tied each get one point. If two tie, all tie, on lowest score, and there are no points awarded. This helps you concentrate on hitting fairways, greens in regulation, and reducing your putts, which leads to lower scores.
